Home to an estimated 881,000 bicycles and over 400km of cycle paths, Amsterdam truly is a haven for bike lovers.

No matter your experience, you can easily become a two-wheeling traveller in Amsterdam. Soon you’ll feel like you’ve always been pedalling along the canals with tulips in your basket or leisurely freewheeling in the beautiful Vondelpark.

The city is safe with many dedicated cycle lanes and a 30km speed limit (which can help those not used to city cycling, like me, relax very quickly), plus it’s flat and compact – so it’s easy to see all the major sights by bike. Just remember to give way to the trams!

There’s a plethora of bike rental shops dotted around the city so you can rock up on the day to hire, and almost all have websites where you can check out hire rates and tour options in advance. Many also offer guided tour options as well, and will have basic maps for guidance.

MacBike is a popular bike hire option, established for 25 years and with five rental shops dotted around the city. Rental costs €7.50 for 3 hours, €9.75 for 24 hours. The company also offers a daily Amsterdam City Bike Tour, with a guide taking you to the city’s biggest sights.

Amsterbike rental costs €8.50 for 3 hours and €12.50 for 24 hours. They also offer tours starting from €19.50, so you can experience ‘Historical Amsterdam’ or the ‘Dutch Landscape’ with a guide.

Rentabike offers 3-hour hire for €6.75, while 24-hour hire costs €9.40.

You may want to consider theft insurance, as just like in any other bike-loving city, bikes do get stolen. It costs approximately €3 for 24 hours with most hire companies.

On a tight budget? Many shops, including MacBike and Amsterbike, offer a 25% discount with the ‘I amsterdam’ City Card. Check out iamsterdam.com for more information.

So why not rent a bike and make like a local on your next Amsterdam trip? You won’t go wrong with this handy guide we’ve put together offering lots of etiquette and safety tips, plus there’s even a cycle route taking in unmissable sights such as Anne Frank’s house, the museums and flower market.
