Sometimes it’s just a bit too bright to be looking at things during the day. You don’t want to be squinting to see things clearly, and often that accursed sun of ours makes merely standing in a tourist spot too much like a sweltering sauna.

That being said, there are certain places in the world that truly demand you go at night for the full experience.

New Year’s Eve, Sydney

No offence to Auckland, but Sydney NYE is really the world’s first big party of the year.

Where else are you going to be at midnight?

Natural Bridges National Monument, Utah

Today there are a few Dark Sky Parks, but Natural Bridges was the first. It gives visitors one of the best opportunities on the globe to see the night sky in all its twinkling glory.

As the name implies, it’s also covered in naturally-occurring bridges formed by centuries of erosion so you won’t be disappointed if you only go during the day.

Macau, China

The place that leaves Las Vegas envious is chock full of casinos, music venues and night clubs.

In the cold sober light of day, all the libertine venues might seem gaudy, but at night the shimmering neon displays will utterly hypnotise you.
