Qatar Airways is claiming to have made aviation history after operating the world’s first ever commercial passenger flight fuelled by natural gas.
The Middle Eastern carrier flew an Airbus A340-600 from London Gatwick to Doha on Monday (October 12) using a synthetic blend of gas and oil-based kerosene.
Hybrid fuels such as the one used by Qatar Airways emit less sulphur dioxide than conventional aircraft jet fuels, making them potentially more eco-friendly.
Airline CEO Akbar Al Baker explained that advancements in fuel technology could contribute to improved air quality around major airports, as well as reducing overall emissions.
“Once again, Qatar Airways has shown its commitment to the environment and we expect this alternative fuel to provide benefits, particularly the improvement of air quality,” he said.
“This milestone flight is the first step in making this alternative fuel available to airlines. Qatar Airways looks forward to continuing to work with the consortium members to further develop this exciting project and commit towards a cleaner environment.”
Several media representatives were aboard the milestone flight, which marks the culmination of two years of research into natural gas-based aircraft fuels.
But cynics have noted that, notwithstanding the green benefits, Qatar Airways may have had an ulterior motive for the trial. Despite its tiny size, Qatar has one of the world’s largest natural gas reserves and would profit immeasurably from an industry switch to gas.
