Malaga Airport (AGP) is one of the busiest airports in Spain and an important tourism gateway to the popular Costa del Sol region. It’s situated 8km (5 miles) from the city of Malaga and 5km (3 miles) from Torremolinos. More than 12 million passengers catch flights to Malaga Airport from all over the world each year, especially in the summer months.

There are three terminals at Malaga Airport. Different airlines have check-in desks at different terminals, but all flights leave from Terminal 3 (the newest terminal) which opened in late 2010. It’s twice the size of Terminal 2 and has a large food hall, as well as several other facilities.

Although the new Terminal 3 is spacious and has lots of new facilities, this is one of those airports that feels like it’s permanently under construction, so be prepared for detours and poor signage at times.

Terminal Transfer

There are three terminals at Malaga Airport. While different airlines have check-in desks in different terminals, all flights leave from Terminal 3. This can make for some confusion if catching a regular flight (never mind a connecting flight) so double-check your ticket and give yourself enough time between flights.

Getting into Town

Train: The new Terminal 3 has a transport hub just outside the entrance to the building with a train station and bus station accessible from the arrivals section. The new suburban rail line runs every 30 minutes from the city to Fuengirola via the airport. It should take 12 minutes to get into Malaga. The fare is about €2.

Bus: The Airport Express and No. 19 bus leave from the transport hub outside the arrivals section of Terminal 3. The former goes to the city centre and the latter to the Port of Malaga. They should cost less than €2 one way.

Taxi: Taxis are available from the arrivals roadway. Approximate fares to cities in the region include Benalmadena town (€26), Marbella (€62), Cala de Mijas (€42), and Torremolinos (€15). Note that fares are marginally higher at night.

Car Parking

There are a few car parks at Malaga Airport. The short-term car parks are the five-storey lot P1 and the first floor of P2, with another, P7, near the General Aviation Terminal. P1 connects to Terminal 3 via the air bridge in the second floor and is cheaper than P2. Parking charges are by the minute – it costs about €0.023 a minute for the first half hour, then €0.037 for the next, and €0.03 thereafter. The maximum daily rate up to four days is €18.30, or €14.65 from the fifth day. There are a number of payment machines that take notes, coins and credit cards in the car park. P3 is the long-term car park and costs €5.10 per day for the first ten days, or less if you book ahead.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: There are ATMs and currency exchange facilities in Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, open from 8am to 10:30pm.

Luggage: There is no left-luggage facility at the airport. There are several lost-luggage offices operated by the airlines in the baggage claim areas in Terminal 2 and 3. There’s also a general lost property desk in Terminal 3.

Conference and business: The Costa Del Sol Lounge can be booked in advance for meetings and conferences, while the Europa Aena is a general business centre with free faxes to Spanish addresses, newspapers and magazines, a TV, phone booths, and self-service drinks and snacks. Both lounges are in Terminal 2.

Other facilities: Travel agencies, a chapel, a medical centre, police station, baby-changing facilities, an exhibition hall, and handicapped facilities.

Wi-Fi: There is Wi-Fi at the airport, although it’s not free – you’ll need to go through the service provider Movistar, with vouchers costing €5.50 for an hour and €10.34 for 24 hours. There are also several Internet kiosks throughout the terminals, and free Wi-Fi in the business lounges.
