Virgin Atlantic has released a list of the weirdest things that travellers have tried to check in at its 32 airports around the world.

Amongst the items named were a coconut tree, a giant cheese wheel, a dead cow and a tarantula. The oddness definitely doesn’t stop there, though – one customer tried to check in a bath tub, whilst another brought along a bag of soil.

One crew member recounts an anecdote of a passenger attempting to cheekily check in a bag of cutlery stolen from a Virgin Atlantic flight. Another remembers a couple who enjoyed their Caribbean holiday so much that they wanted to bring a bag of sand and sea water back on the flight with them as a keepsake.

Greg Dawson, Virgin Atlantic’s Director of Corporate Communications, commented, “Our check-in staff see thousands of passengers on a daily basis but every now and then, a passenger will arrive at check-in with something you would never expect.”

Earlier this year, Virgin Atlantic also released a list of some of the oddest requests its staff get from passengers. These included a plea to turn the engine volume down and the turbulence off. Another passenger wanted to know if there was a McDonald’s on board.
