This week we’ve got the RMS Titanic on our mind. It’s almost 100 years since she made her maiden – and final – voyage.
To mark the anniversary, James Cameron has re-released his epic film Titanic in 3D – 15 years after the original hit our screens.
Commemorations of the disaster, which occurred on 14/15 April 1912, are being held in various places around the world. So, where can you find the most extensive collection of Titanic memorabilia?
Titanic Belfast
The largest Titanic exhibition in the world is due to open in Belfast this weekend. The six-storey, nine-gallery, museum has everything you need to know about the Titanic.
Visitors to Titanic Belfast will be taken on a journey through the vessel’s short life – from her conception in Belfast, through to the construction and launch, and finally to that fateful night in the Atlantic.
Nova Scotia
When the ship first collided with the iceberg, White Star officials in New York had believed the damaged ship would sail to Halifax in Nova Scotia – the closest port.
However, when the scale of the disaster became evident, cable ships were dispatched from Halifax to recover the bodies of victims. One hundred years on, the port still remembers the tragedy and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is displaying artefacts and first-person accounts.
Missouri, USA
You may not think a landlocked state in America would have much to offer in the way of Titanic memorabilia, but the Titanic Museum in Missouri gets visitors as close to the disaster as possible.
The museum is the shape of the ship itself, built half-scale to the original. Inside, visitors will find hundreds of artefacts and get a sense of what it was like on that maiden voyage.
