The slow switch from the long days of summer to the long nights of winter is well underway. But that’s not going to get Philadelphia down. No siree! The city’s come up with the ideal antidote to SAD this autumn – a stunning array of light displays in no fewer than 5 special exhibitions and 6 permanent exhibitions.

Anyone in town on October 14 can become the conductor of an epic light display in the centre of the city. Twenty-four robotic searchlights, powerful enough to be seen from up to 10 miles away, have been positioned along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Passers-by can take control of them by using a free, downloadable mobile app sculpture – the app analyses the voices and locations of users to set the searchlights in motion.
Bruce Munro, the British artist and light designer, has turned the Longwood Gardens, about 30 miles from Philadelphia, into a surreal, beautiful spot with flower blooms, waterfalls and floating water lillies that glow in the dark. The exhibition runs until September 29.
The giant LED display on the crown of the PECO building will showcase art and animation from local and international artists from 7pm to midnight each Friday.
