One of the three largest airports in China, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is located 28km (17 miles) from central Guangzhou. About 41 million passengers used the airport in 2010 flying from (and to) more than 100 domestic and international destinations.
Although there is a new terminal, chaos and disorganisation are big problems at Guangzhou Baiyun International. Smoking areas are in close proximity to child-care rooms and water dispensers, and ventilation is poor. Food prices are generally high, even by airport standards.
Fortunately, a major construction project that is set to improve efficiency throughout all operations is underway. When the entire multi-phase project is complete, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport will be able to handle 75 million passengers annually.
Terminal Transfer
The terminal building consists of four stories. The underground floor leads to the subway station, the first floor is the arrivals hall, the second floor is the Arrivals Interlayer, and the third floor is the departures hall, each of which can be accessed by foot. A golf-cart service transports passengers between check-in and gates.
Getting into Town
Train: A newly built metro station and railway line links the airport to central Guangzhou and other areas. Tickets cost CNY 12 (about £1).
Bus: Buses connect the airport to central Guangzhou and other areas within the region. Departing every 20-30 minutes, a ticket to the city costs between CNY 16 (£1.50) and CNY 32 (£3), depending on where you’re headed. The buses make lots of stops, so it could take a while to get to your destination.
Taxi: A taxi stand is located outside the arrivals hall. Fares to the city centre costs between CNY 100 (about £10) and CNY 120 (£11).
Car Parking
Parking at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport comprises two areas, one of which is under cover. The charge is CNY 8 (about £0.75) for the first hour, and CNY 5 (approximately £0.50) for every additional hour.
Information Desks
