Hong Kong International Airport is the 11th-busiest airport in the world and is located within five flying hours of half the world’s population. More than 50 million passengers travel through Hong Kong International each year.

It is one of the main aerial gateways to China known for its efficiency and cleanliness, factors that have seen it ranked as one of the top airports in the world (World Airport Awards).

The facility provides an easy and often enjoyable experience; its staff members are friendly, helpful and the service runs like a well-oiled machine. There are two terminals and two runways that keep the airport bustling.

With a host of things to see and do onsite, Hong Kong Airport is a pleasure to spend time in. Art galleries, exhibitions, activities and even a nine-hole golf course offer something to keep everyone happy for the duration of their stay.

Terminal Transfer

Hong Kong offers the premier transfer system in the world. Its free “Automated People Mover” transports passengers from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 and from Terminal 1 to SkyPier, the airport’s high speed ferry service. The driverless electric train travels at more than 63km (40 miles) per hour and transports more than 7,200 passengers per hour. There are electric vehicles to transport passengers to and from their gates.

Getting into Town

Water: Passengers can also make use of the SkyPier ferry service. It is a high-speed ferry that transports passengers to a number of destinations across the bay. Departing every 50-90 minutes, the ferry travels to Dongguan Humen, Guangzhou Nansha, Macao, Shenzhen Fuyong, Shenzhen Shekou, Zhongshan and Zhuhai Jiuzhou. The journeys last from 30-90 minutes, depending on the destination.

Train: Passengers can make use of the MTR Corporation Airport Express Line which departs every 12 minutes between 5:50am and 1:15am. The train stops at Hong Kong and Kowloon station en route, and the journey takes approximately 23 minutes. The commute costs HKD 100 (about £8) per adult for a single journey, octopus card or same day return, and HKD 180 (approximately £14) for a return ticket. The station is located in the Ground Transportation Centre.

Taxis: The Ground Transportation Centre, next to the passenger terminal, is where passengers should go for taxi services. Taxis are plentiful and are three different colours. “Red” take passengers practically anywhere in the city, “Green” taxis go to the New Territories and “Blue” taxis service Lantau. Fares depend on your destination, but an average fare into central Hong Kong is HKD 280 (£22).

Bus: The Ground Transportation Centre provides travellers with a variety of Citibus operated buses that travel to a variety of destinations across the city. Six bus lines go into Kowloon and fares range from HKD 14-24 (less than £2). Frequencies range from every 8-16 minutes for Bus E22 to Tam Lim, to evening rush hour runs only for Bus E22B to Tsuen Kwan O and Bus E22P to Yau Tong.

Car Parking

There is an undercover multi-storey car park and three open air parking lots. Hourly rates are HKD 20 (£1.50) for car parks 1 and 4, and HKD 16 (£1.20) for car park 2; while daily rates are HKD 112 (almost £9) for car park 2 and HKD 140 (£11) for car park 4. There are also monthly rates available. Disabled drivers are eligible for a 50 per cent discount in car park 4.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: There are a number of banks, ATMs, currency exchanges and post offices throughout the airport. A free wireless connection is available anywhere inside the airport and there are additional Internet cafes and PowerPhones, Hong Kong Airport’s innovative multimedia payphones, in the terminal and Ground Transportation Centre.

Luggage: There are more than enough trolleys at drop-off points, and there are porters and an excess baggage shipping service for those extra heavy items. The left luggage counter is in the Arrivals Hall while the luggage services are in the customer service centre.

Conference and business: Some of the best business facilities in the world are available at the airport in the form of the Hong Kong Trade Centre. It’s a Grade A office tower that provides every business assistance imaginable.

Other facilities: The airport offers excellent accessibility to disabled travellers, and there are art galleries, a golf course, cultural exhibitions, video game terminals, a 3D cinema, i-Sports simulator, childrens’ play areas, TV lounges, medical services, nursing rooms, and smoking areas.

Wi-Fi: There is free Wi-Fi throughout T1, T2, the North Satellite Concourse and SkyPier.
