Southampton Airport is the eighteenth busiest airport in the UK. In 2014 it served around 1.8 million passengers and has been the site of aviation activities for over a hundred years. The spitfire fighter jet was first launched here, and the local council has previously registered interest in renaming the airport after the Spitfire’s inventor R J Mitchell.
