Shopping channel QVC has claimed that British ladies will hand over more than £10 million worth of cosmetic items at airport security checkpoints this summer.

Arriving at the checkpoint with gels, aerosols or liquids and then having to hand them over before boarding is costing us dear, the research found. QVC revealed that the items most commonly confiscated were spray deodorants, large bottles of perfume and bottles of sun cream.

Of the 1,000 British ladies questioned, 46 per cent of them reported spending more money at the airport terminal or once they reached their destination, on replacing the items they had confiscated at the checkpoints. Forty-seven per cent of women reported that they remained unclear about the liquid restrictions – which limit them to 100ml of any product – which were rolled out almost five years ago.

The current restrictions are expected to remain in place until at least 2013, when it has been suggested that the EU may alter them.
