Sky-high mini bar prices, small rooms, no view from the window… there are all manner of gripes we have when visiting a hotel.

But according to a new survey, there is one thing that gets on our nerves more than anything at a hotel – dirty linen.

A poll of more than 2,000 Brits by insurance provider Direct Line has revealed that unclean bed sheets and dirty towels are the things that frustrate hotel guests more than anything.

Given that we have to sleep between those sheets and dry ourselves with those towels, it is hardly surprising that so many of us get irritated when they aren’t clean.

But dirty linen isn’t the only thing that hotel guests rank amongst their biggest bugbears – far from it!

Unclean sheets and towels were closely followed by drunk or noisy (or both) neighbouring guests, which happen more often than hotels would like to admit.

It seems that guests also have very little tolerance for bad food at hotels, with many citing this as their biggest pet hate.

Bad food was closely followed by those pesky holiday reps that are a fixture at many hotels on the continent, pestering us to go on a pricey excursion.

But it isn’t just reps and hotel staff who are rubbing people up the wrong way; other hotel guests are a cause of irritation as well.

As well as noisy or drunk neighbours, those guests that reserve the best places around the pool each morning by laying their towels out early annoyed 31 per cent of those surveyed.

A hotel – and its guests – can make or break a holiday and, according to the survey, is one of the most important aspects of a holiday.

Respondents said that hotel cleanliness and food quality are more important than both good weather and on-time flights.
