An eccentric billionaire has announced his intention to create a Titanic II, making the same maiden voyage from the UK to the USA in 2016.
Clive Palmer, the Australian billionaire, has already commissioned CSC Jinling Shipyard, a Chinese company, to build the new ship, using the exact dimensions of its predecessor.
Following the recent 100-year anniversary of one of the biggest maritime disasters in history, it is easy to see why many might not get on board with the idea of another Titanic.
The original Titanic was the biggest ship of its time and sank after colliding with an iceberg on 14/15 April 1912, resulting in the death of 1,514 passengers and crew.
The new ship is expected to have the same specifications – 270 metres long, 53 metres high and weighing up to 40,000 tons. The new vessel will feature 840 luxury cabins, high-class restaurants, gymnasiums, swimming pools and libraries.
Potential passengers can take comfort in the knowledge that the vessel will “be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems”.
Mr Palmer also stated that, like its predecessor, the Titanic II is: “going to be designed so it won’t sink.”
Putting minds at ease when quizzed if the Titanic II could potentially sink, Mr Palmer replied: “Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it.”
The cost of the construction is unknown and if all goes to plan the new vessel is scheduled to sale from London to New York towards the end of 2016.
