When it comes to booking a holiday, we Brits love a good deal. There are plenty of them around too, with plenty of package deals, cheap flights and family discounts to be found online. (Featured image by lesum)

Yet while there are plenty of attractive deals, it seems holidaymakers are sick of being hit with hidden costs.

It’s a case of “if it seems too good to be true, it probably is” as research has found that more than half of Brits have had to shell out for hidden charges they were not expecting when they first booked their holiday.

The research, by holiday company Teletext Holidays, found that many Brits have reached breaking point. Forty per cent claim that they are sick of the hidden costs.

“It is clear many people are getting fed up with some websites advertising misleading deals, with super cheap prices that appear too good to be true just so they can get people to pick up the phone,” said Victoria Sanders, managing director of Teletext Holidays.

While it was revealed that around a third of us enjoy looking for holiday bargains, one in six people are not fully aware of what the advertised prices include.

Almost a quarter of the 2,000 holidaymakers polled in the research said they had been stung by unexpected taxes, while almost 10 per cent had to pay excess baggage fees.

Others had to pay extra for check-in and airport transfers, while some even had to fork out for a flight they had not been expecting to pay for.

“People should be careful who they book with. What may look like a good deal doesn’t always add up – taxes, check-in charges should legally be included in the advertised price,” said Ms Sanders.

“That is something we think should be made much clearer so people are able to budget properly,” she added.
