Threatened strike action at Brussels Charleroi Airport has been called off, much to the relief of passengers flying in and out of Belgium over the Christmas period.
Security workers employed by the Walloon government had announced that they would strike today (December 21), prompting outrage from airlines and passengers alike.
But Ryanair has confirmed that the industrial action will not be taking place, meaning that previously-announced cancellations and diversions will now be reinstated. The low-fares airline plans to operate all scheduled flights to and from Brussels Charleroi and has sent email notification to affected passengers.
Peter Sherrard, Ryanair’s head of communications, said: “We welcome the news that this strike has been called off and that the travel plans of more than 5,000 Ryanair passengers will not be ruined over the busy Christmas holiday period.
“It is regretful that the civil servants who operate security at Charleroi Airport showed so much disregard for the travelling public by announcing this strike in the first place, however we welcome the fact that it has now been called off,” he added.
Ryanair launched services from Charleroi in 1997 and the airline now operates routes to Dublin, Faro, Glasgow Prestwick, London Stansted, Madrid, Marseilles and Milan, among other destinations.
