A row broke out at Glasgow Airport recently after some passengers had their duty-free items confiscated.
The incident happened when a Thomas Cook flight from Las Vegas made a routine stop at Glasgow Airport and passengers went through Customs before carrying on to Manchester Airport, their final destination.
Airport workers told some of the passengers that the cigarettes and alcohol they had bought from duty-free would have to be confiscated as the plastic bags had been stapled, rather than sealed and therefore did not meet Department for Transport standards.
There were angry scenes when passengers were then told that they might not get their items back for at least another day as they would have to be delivered by road. The police had to be called, although no arrests were made, and airline bosses eventually intervened and said that the goods could be transported in the hold.
The dispute caused the flight to be delayed by two hours and one passenger called the incident “a total shambles”.
A Thomas Cook spokesperson said that the passengers were not at fault and the issue of bag sealing would be taken up with staff at Las Vegas Airport so that similar problems don’t happen again.
