Cyprus and Malta are the cheapest destinations within the Commonwealth for Brits to visit, a new study has revealed.
Following the recent hike in Air Passenger Duty (APD), which came into effect on 1st April, the cost of a family holiday overseas has increased. Malta, however, could soon prove to be the holiday destination of choice for many as the price of a week-long trip to the islands has only increased by £1 within the last year.
Costs only rose by a minuscule 0.08 per cent in Malta last year, making it the ideal holiday spot for cash-strapped Brits who are searching for some much needed sunshine.
A study by M&S Money of 10 Commonwealth countries found that for a seven-day holiday including flights, Cyprus and Malta were the cheapest with Kenya in third place.
Visiting Cyprus for seven days would have the lowest costs, at just £1,199 including flights. This is closely followed by Malta at just £1,230 and Kenya (£1,435).
Kenya offered the best value as a destination, at just £988 not including flights. Despite prices rising by a significant 13.65 per cent in the last year within the country, it is still one of the cheapest locations for Brits to visit.
Singapore on the other hand is not as kind to British wallets, as it was found to be the most expensive holiday destination at £2,662 including flights, followed by New Zealand (£2,206).
Jane Lawson, head of travel money at M&S Money, told the Daily Mail:
“In the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year many people will be tempted to follow in the footsteps of the Royal Family and see what the Commonwealth has to offer.
Luckily, favourable exchange rates and lower inflation mean many countries in the Commonwealth offer great value for money.” Malta is typically a popular holiday destination for Brits who are looking for something cheap and cheerful. During the high seasons, tourists often head to St Julian’s, Valletta and Sliema.
