Passengers at Newcastle Airport are being told to expect short delays as the gateway works through the backlog caused by yesterday’s (August 6) closure.
Flights into and out of the airport were halted after an RAF Tornado overshot the runway during an emergency landing. The jet had encountered difficulties following a suspected bird strike.
Ministry of Defence and air accident investigators ordered the facility to be closed for around 90 minutes, diverting all incoming flights to Manchester, Edinburgh and Durham Tees Valley.
Airport officials insist that services at Newcastle are now largely back to normal, though they say small delays are likely and travellers concerned about their flight should contact the airline.
Commenting on the incident, Newcastle Airport spokesman Graham Mason told the BBC: “We have procedures in place to deal with these situations and I’m pleased to say they worked very well.”
He continued: “The impact of the runway being closed was relatively limited because it was for a brief period of time, but we apologise to passengers who were affected.”
