San Francisco is proud of its green image. The city happily claims the mantle “Greenest City in North America” – not least because it has the highest recycling and composting rate of all US cities.
It comes as no surprise, then, that San Francisco pays annual tribute to Earth Day, which falls on 22 April each year.

This year, a week of green events are taking place across the Bay Area, including free entry to the region’s National Parks, a Pacifica Beach public space clean-up drive, an activity day at Crissy Field Centre and an Earth Day on the Bay outing hosted by the Marine Science Institute.
The greening of the city culminates in the annual Earth Day San Francisco event on Sunday. Civic Centre Plaza will play host to free live music, eco-friendly arts and crafts, interactive workshops and several prominent environmental speakers throughout the day.
The festival will also include a number of demonstrations from renowned raw food chefs, a holistic health zone where visitors can sample alternative therapies, a fashion show comprised of garments made only from sustainable raw and organic materials and a kids’ zone featuring a number of attractions that aim to entertain and inform kids.
