Edinburgh Airport was forced to close one of its major runways yesterday (April 23) after the discovery of a hole.

The Scottish airport was closed to incoming flights for three hours, with planes diverted to Glasgow and Prestwick, after the discovery was made at 3pm.

A BAA spokesperson said that repair work was carried out on the hole and the problem was fixed by 5.15pm.

“Earlier this afternoon we temporarily closed our main runway following the discovery of an area of damage to its surface,” she said.

“The runway was closed for just under three hours in order to carry out repair work. During this time aircraft operated from our secondary runway.”

She added that the temporary closure had resulted in the diversion of 11 inbound flights, while a number of arriving and departing aircraft were expected to experience delays.
