On the evening of August 11, Arches National Park, will host a free “Moon and Meteors” event at Balanced Rock Viewpoint and Picnic Area.
Arches National Park is a US National Park in Utah famous for its 2000 plus natural sandstone arches.
The event ties in with the annual Perseid meteor shower that can produce as many as 50 to 100 meteors an hour from 10pm until just before dawn.
From 9pm to 11pm the park will offer a special ranger-led night sky and stargazing programme to help visitors get the most out of this unique experience.
Rangers will be on hand to help focus telescopes for less-experienced stargazers and point out key sights in the night’s sky. Expert watchers are also welcome to stargaze independently and search for meteors along the Balanced Rock trail.
Visitors reminded to:
- carpool to limit traffic congestion, parking is limited
- bring chairs, water, and flashlights (red ones are best to protect night vision)
- bring binoculars or stargazing equipment if you have it
- stay on trails, paved surfaces, or bare rock to avoid stepping on fragile soil crust
