The population of the small Alabama beach city of Gulf Shores will swell to seven times its normal size today as 35,000 music fans arrive in town for the Hangout Music Fest (18, 19 and 20 May).
In its short three-year history, the four-day blast has catapulted itself into the US music festival big league. Its size and stellar lineup allow it to stand aside the likes of Lollapalooza (Chicago), Bonnaroo (Tennessee), Sasquatch! (Washington) and NO Jazz (New Orleans).
Hangout Music Fest is made unique by its beach location. After working up a sweat in the mosh-pit, festival hedonists are only a quick dash across the sand to a refreshing dip in the Gulf of Mexico.
The sold-out event warms up with a kick-off party today, before some 50 acts perform across five stages on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White and Dave Matthews Band are headlining, while popular bands Wilco, The Flaming Lips and Gogol Bordello will compete for the attention of a sun-soaked crowd.
