Iceland is expecting a bumper year for tourism in 2012, having been recognised as one of the world’s top destinations in several award ceremonies.
The Nordic island recently featured in the Top Ten Countries and Top Ten Cities at the Lonely Planet’s Travel Readers’ Choice Awards.
Iceland was also the winner of the European Adventure Destination at the Sunday Times Travel Magazine Readers’ Awards 2011.
Tourism to Iceland has increased by 22 per cent since 2003, and tourist numbers are set to increase due to a wealth of new services to the island.
Heimir Már Pétursson is Public Relations Manager at Iceland Express, one of Europe’s quirkiest cheap airlines. He said: “Iceland has barely left the headlines over the past year and a half due to its infamous volcanoes – it has brought the destination to the forefront of people’s minds,”
“Travellers want to witness this unique country that they have heard so much about, for themselves.”
Iceland Express connects the capital of Reykjavik to several European destinations, including Copenhagen, Berlin, and Warsaw.
The low-cost airline, which launched in 2003, also currently operates a daily service between London Gatwick and Reykjavik.
Tourism to Iceland will also be boosted by the introduction of new routes by other low-cost airlines, including easyJet and WOW Air – a new Icelandic carrier.
easyJet recently announced a new service between Luton Airport and Reykjavik, operating three times a week.
Commencing on 12 March 2012, prices for the service will start from £32.99 for a one-way ticket and £58.81 for a return.
“It is hugely exciting to be able to offer easyJet flights to Iceland for the very first time,” said Paul Simmons, easyJet’s UK Director.
“Our new route will not only be attractive for business travellers, but also for those looking for culture-rich city breaks or adventurous travellers looking for unrivalled scenery and activities.”
