It seems that Brits are planning to make the most of the four-day bank holiday weekend, with many heading overseas.

According to figures from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), almost two million Brits are planning to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne by heading abroad.

Holidaymakers are keen to get their dose of sun from 2-5 June, with many even booking an additional three days off work to unwind for a full nine days in their favourite resorts on the continent.

Savvy travellers are also cashing in on the pound’s strength against the Euro, with holidays to Greece and Spain proving popular.

Travellers looking for a budget break over the Jubilee may be able to find low-cost deals to countries such as Cyprus, Tunisia and Turkey, according to ABTA.

Paris, Dublin, Amsterdam, Rome and New York are in the top five of city breaks that offer manageable crowds and a mild climate at this time of year.

The travel association also revealed that families will be heading to resorts in Florida and Mexico in their droves, to take advantage of the pristine beaches and family-friendly theme parks.

“Millions of us will be taking a break in the UK with thousands flocking to London to join in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations,” said Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive.

“But the long weekend provided by the extra bank holidays has also given millions of holidaymakers the opportunity to head off overseas and take advantage of the pound’s strength against the Euro.”

Airport figures show a high number of departures over the Jubilee weekend. An estimated 410,000 will leave from Heathrow, 200,000 from Gatwick, 120,000 from Stansted and 60,000 from Luton.

More than 100,000 will also be departing from the Scottish airports. This is in addition to 140,000 travellers leaving from Manchester and 60,000 from Birmingham.

ABTA’s figures show that more than four million Brits are planning to celebrate the Jubilee in style with a staycation. Edinburgh and Manchester topped the list of city breaks outside London over the Jubilee.
