Have you got your flowers and chocolates at the ready? You had better get your act together; Mother’s Day is this weekend. (Featured image by jen_rab)

This Sunday will see calls being made, cards being opened and flowers enjoyed, as we celebrate and give thanks to our mums.

Every family has their own special Mother’s Day traditions; from breakfast in bed to a full-on pampering session at a luxury spa.

Whatever you do this Mother’s Day, your mum will no doubt appreciate it. But if you really want to go all-out this Sunday, why not whisk them away to one of these ideal mother-daughter (or son) destinations?

Shopping in Paris

Head across the Channel for a long weekend of cafes, couture and high-class fashion in one of Europe’s best shopping cities.

Paris is full to the brim with designer boutiques, high-street fashion and back-street independent stores that are just begging to be explored – perfect for any budget.

With cheap flights available to the French capital, and some very reasonable accommodation prices, it is the perfect mother-daughter getaway.

Walking in Sicily

If your mum is more of an outdoor enthusiast than a shopaholic, why not treat her to a walking holiday in beautiful Sicily?

There are stunning views at every turn on the Italian island, and plenty of walking routes along the coast or further inland.

With a rugged coastline and picturesque countryside, not to mention Europe’s tallest active volcano in Mount Etna, there is plenty to see and do on this Mediterranean island.

Spa treatment in Switzerland

What mum doesn’t want to be pampered and preened in a luxury spa resort? If you want to go that extra mile this year, swap the rolling hills of the British countryside for the mountains of Switzerland.

The landlocked European country might be best known for its superb chocolate, but its spa resorts offer luxury against a stunning mountainous backdrop.

These will be a little more expensive than your average British countryside spa, but you’ll get more than your money’s worth in relaxation and brownie points from your mum.

Beach break in the Canaries

It may still feel like winter in some parts of the UK, but down in the Canary Islands summer is most definitely on the way!

So, why not escape the cold with your mum and head south to Tenerife, Lanzarote or Gran Canaria this month?

The temperatures won’t be quite the same as during the summer, but the crowds won’t have arrived yet so you’ll have the beach and pool almost to yourself.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! (London)

This one is more suited to a mother and young child, as Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, the fun-loving museum in the heart of London, is offering free entry for mothers this Sunday.

Kids just need to sign a “Tidying Treaty”, promising to do a chore or two around the house, when they arrive at the West End attraction and their mum can get in for free.

Displaying weird-and-wonderful things from around the world, including a matchstick Tower Bridge and full-sized knitted Ferrari, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is a great day out for all the family.
