Consumer group Which? has published a new “60 second” online guide to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

The card, which is free of charge and simple to apply for, entitles you to free or discounted medical treatment whilst holidaying in Europe.

The EHIC was rolled out in 2005 and replace the old E111 forms, which are now no longer valid. It is essential that you apply for a new card before jetting off on holidays this summer – so head to the official EHIC website – www.ehic.org.uk – to apply for one online. Your EHIC will be valid for five years.

Make sure you steer clear of the websites which try to charge you for a card, there is no need to pay for one when you can get one for free.

The card will entitle you to healthcare in participating countries, with treatment delivered on the same basis – and at the same cost – as it would be for locals. Be prepared that you may have to pay a proportion of the costs for treatment in certain countries, if they do not have an NHS equivalent in place.
