The AA has released new advice for travellers driving cars abroad.

Those hiring cars while on their holidays this year would be wise to ensure they check out what the speed limits are and stick carefully to them.

According to the AA, in many countries speeding fines can be handed out instantly and can be very tough – far higher than in the UK – and the old “I’m not from around here” excuse just won’t wash.

Police may well request that fines are paid on the spot and, if not, vehicles can be impounded immediately, leaving you with a major problem.

The motoring body said, “There are reciprocal arrangements between the UK and most other EU countries for motoring offences, such as from an enforcement camera, so the fine will follow you home and will be recovered by a UK court,” the motoring group added.

“Take note that some motorways as well as urban highways measure average speed between cameras,” added the AA.
