In the 12 years since September 11, memorials honouring those who lost their lives that day and those who risked their lives to save others have emerged around the world.
Whether they’re makeshift memorials – stretches of flowers, messages and American flags – common in the days following September 11, or the pools that now sit where the World Trade Center towers stood, the physical displays commemorating 9/11 are sacred, powerful and moving. Memorials in places like Padua, Italy and Albuquerque, New Mexico include sections of steel beams recovered from the wreckage at Ground Zero, while others like the 1,776-foot-tall Freedom Tower in New York are impressive examples of modern architecture.
Pictured here are just some of the many touching 9/11 memorials around the world.
