Richmond Council has announced that it is planning to offer support for action to oppose the expansion of Heathrow Airport.

In a meeting of the council’s cabinet held last week, it was agreed that funds would be made available “for a possible legal challenge to the government over its decision” to develop the airport.

Serge Lourie, leader of the council, said that Richmond is extremely unhappy about the decision to develop Heathrow, as is the local community.

He suggested that the expansion is likely to cause many problems for the area and the council is prepared to “fight” in a bid to try and make sure that it does not go ahead.

Lourie said: “These plans are opposed, on a cross-party basis, because we are clear that the result of the expansion will be a significant and unacceptable deterioration in the quality of life for millions of people who live near Heathrow and under the flight paths.

“In company with our partners we are therefore minded to seek a judicial review of the government’s plans.

Subject only to our final legal advice, we are up for the fight.”
