A new application for the social networking website Facebook will allow users to track their friends’ flight movements over a map.

Called Flight Tracker, the application has been created by the developers of FlightStats, the airline, airport, and travel information service, and allows Facebook users to share flights status and location, as well as get airport and weather reports straight to their profile page.

Users can set up any number of flight status alerts for specific arrivals and departures, each with their own notification options.

For each flight, users can elect to have messages sent as a Facebook Notification to their own account, sent to their mini-feed to share with their friends, emailed to any specific addresses, or sent as a text message to mobile devices.

Jeff Kennedy of Conducive Technology, which developed the application, told Eye For Travel: “We worked hard to build a flight tracker that supports Facebook users’ imperative to share with friends. And we feel as if we’re just beginning to tap into the potential for combining travel technology and social networking.”
