This networking site has become an indispensable tool for savvy travellers. Whether you’re looking for inspiration, the best deals, the latest travel news or advice, Twitter has it. And with just 140 characters to work with, “tweets” have to be short and snappy. There is no room for fluff. It’s now the fastest way to engage in real-time dialogue with other travellers, travel agents and airlines.

The trick is to follow the right travel tweeters (see the Telegraph’s Twitter: 50 great travel tweeters – still relevant today). Start by following your favourite airlines. US carriers such as JetBlue have led the way, but British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Ryanair and easyJet are also reaching out to their customers via Twitter.

Our top five tips

  1. Show you’re human with a short bio and a photo or custom avatar.
  2. Be polite and generous. Don’t spam your followers and remember that everyone can see your tweets (including your Mum and your boss).
  3. Hashtags, @mentions and abbreviations are great but don’t overuse them. Remember that there’s a human trying to read your tweets.
  4. If you’re including a link, add a little value. Give readers a reason to click.
  5. A little bit of self-promotion is fine but don’t overdo it. Twitter, like Facebook and Pinterest, is a social network.
