In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Cheapflights’ romance experts have rounded up their favourite places around the world? Romance anyone?
Kissing, Germany
Doubtless a regular on Valentine’s Day lists, we start with Kissing (it all starts with a kiss right?) On second glance it seems rather forlorn (and the sign is slightly battered, photographed by caesararum) … Next!
Romance, Arkansas, United States
Across the Atlantic we go in search of more romance, er… Romance. In Arkansas. The state that is best known for giving us Bill Clinton, this town also has a cemetery (apparently).
Lover, Wiltshire, UK
A quick skip back to the United Kingdom, Wiltshire to be specific, brings us to Lover. Another regular at this time of year.
Love County, Oklahoma
Let’s not hang around. Back to the US for a quick peek at Love County in the country’s south. This time we have an entire county to take in, but focus instead on a single building, the court house, where happy couples may get hitched.
Cupids, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Staying in North America, but heading north (way north), we come to the first in a series that is uniquely Canadian and set in Newfoundland. A shade over 400 years old, it was the first English colony in Canada. The first recorded birth of an English child in Canada took place here too. No surprise really, Cupids is located in Conception Bay.
Heart’s Content, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
This small town was a communications hub for 100 years. The first permanent telegraph cable connecting Europe and North America was hauled ashore here, carrying many messages of love in its time, we bet.
Heart’s Delight, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
Finally, we skip over to Heart’s Delight. Both places display correct usage of the apostrophe (there’s a Heart’s Desire too), but we’re rather distracted by the name of a nearby town that doubtless features on a list with a very different theme …
French Lick, Indiana
Let’s move on. Heading south again we come to Indiana, home to French Lick. Its eye-catching name comes from its origins – a French trading post built near a salt lick. It enjoyed a spell as a noted spa in the 19th century and is now a ritzy resort town.
Lovers Leap, Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica
This beauty spot on Jamaica’s southwest coast fuses love and death. From the top of the 1,700 ft cliff, two lovers leaped to their deaths to escape the slave master who wanted the girl for himself.
Loving, New Mexico
It’s nuclear. Yes, really. This sweetly named town, about 40km (25 miles) southeast of Carlsbad is the most accessible atomic explosion site in the United States. The test explosion had an oddly pedestrian name – Project Gnome.
Climax, Georgia
Finally, we finish off with a bang in (where else?) Climax. It’s the highest point on the railroad between Savannah and the Chattahoochee River, but might be best known now for its annual Swine Time festival.
