Birmingham city council are considering plans to rename Birmingham International Airport in honour of rock legend and ex-Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne.
Ozzy Osbourne isn’t the first name that springs to mind when you think of international aviation or airline safety, but Birmingham International Airport may soon be named after the local man who became a mega-star.
The move to rename Birmingham International Airport would follow similar moves in the UK, made by Liverpool and Belfast. Speke Airport in Liverpool was renamed John Lennon Airport in honour of the ex-Beatle in 2002, while Belfast City Airport is now officially named George Best Belfast City Airport in honour of the Northern Ireland footballer and ex-Manchester United player.
While Ozzy may have some similarities to both Lennon and Best, internationally he will be joining a select few celebrities that have had the honour of an airport being named after them. He’ll join the likes of John Wayne (Orange County, California), Bob Hope (Burbank, California) and Louis Armstrong (New Orleans International Airport) in having an airport bearing his name.
Earlier this month budget carrier easyJet announced that it will increase flights to Birmingham from Northern Ireland next year, in response to high demand on the route. Monarch Airlines also began flying direct from Birmingham to Grenoble in December, too.
