Between films such as Batman Begins (2005), Die Another Day (2002), Prometheus (2012) and Oblivion (2013) and TV series such as Game of Thrones, Iceland has played the part of alien planet, raging battlefield, tropical Pacific Islands, Alaska, Siberia, the Himalayas and snow-covered fantasy land.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is the latest Hollywood production to use the country as its backlot.

Why is it so popular? It’s to do with the light, the long daylight hours in summer (21 hours a day between mid May and mid August) and a generous government refund of 20 per cent for expenditure by feature films and TV projects.
