Situated along the Queensland coast just four hours north of Brisbane, Bundaberg is an excellent place for discovering the many different facades of this beautiful region. Affectionately known as “Bundy”, the town is often described as the “Southern gateway to the Great Barrier Reef”. Here you can hop on a boat to the coral cays for a spot of snorkelling or diving with all manner of marine life or take an adventure into the untouched wilderness of Fraser Island to see wild dingos. Bundaberg is a popular tourist destination thanks to its close proximity to long stretches of sandy beaches, such as Woodgate Beach to the south with its pristine white sands. The town itself sits on the Bundaberg River and offers plenty of rural space and parkland with subtropical gardens for families to enjoy. This modern town seamlessly mixes old and new, juxtaposing a bustling town centre with a large number of heritage sites. Renowned for its food and drink exports, such as macadamia nuts and sugar cane, many tourists visit the town to sample its fresh produce, fruit and vegetables. A tour of the Rum Distillery is particularly popular with visitors searching for an authentic Australian beverage.
Although it’s easy to explore the town on foot, you can simply hop on one of the local buses. The bus routes extend to the local suburbs and beaches, including Bargara and Innes Park on the coast. The town also has its own railway station, where you can make the journey to Brisbane by passenger train in four and a half hours.
