As the capital of North Dakota, Bismarck has all the charm of a bustling city alongside the natural beauty of green spaces and the Missouri River waterway running along the east of the city. The area offers a legion of walking trails, camping sites, and cycle paths for those who enjoy exploring their travel destinations whilst being kind to the environment. Simply head to one of Bismarck’s many parks and recreational grounds for a picnic, or set off on an educational trail that will help you enjoy the surrounding scenery whilst you learn a bit about the area’s history. Check out the Chief Lookings’ Earthlodge Village Interpretive Trail to travel back in time to 1675, or get up close to nature on the Rotary Club Arboretum Trail as you wander past different varieties of plant and tree species. For a different experience of Bismarck, consider visiting the city’s Arts & Galleries Association that hosts a range of artwork from locals and international artists alike. Don’t worry if you’re not enthused by art because there’s sure to be something to spark your interest from within the city’s interactive science museum, appropriately named The Gateway to Science. With a whole series of free events designed for families, the museum offers hands-on exhibits to help both young and old to learn more about the workings of our planet. Many who visit the area can’t leave without having spent some time at the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park. Take a guided tour of this former military headquarters that was once home to the 7th Cavalry before the Battle of Little Bighorn, or simply discover the on-site museum before setting off on a walk down the nature trails.
With a well-established bus system serving Bismarck and neighbouring Madan, visitors will be able to navigate their way around Bismarck easily. Of course, since the city is renowned for its parks and greenery, you may prefer to explore on your own two feet. Don’t forget your walking boots!
Bismarck Municipal Airport (BIS) is in Burleigh County (North Dakota), 3 miles (5 km) southeast of Bismarck. Depending on where in the city you are staying, you may be able to get a shuttle directly from the airport to your hotel. Alternatively, there are three car rental companies available at the airport should you wish to continue your onward journey in comfort and style. Ring up in advance if you’d prefer to take a taxi as there may not always be free cabs available on the day.
