Colorado’s Grand Junction offers something for everyone. Outdoor activities and recreational opportunities abound, while stunning sights of Mother Nature at her best keep visitors coming year after year. Grand Junction is also building a buzz as Colorado’s wine country, without the crowds of locales like Napa Valley or Sonoma.
Surrounded by the peaks of Grand Mesa and the incredible red rocks of the Colorado National Monument, it’s hard not to spend your entire trip outdoors when visiting Grand Junction. Hiking and camping are popular activities in this part of Colorado, while a drive on the Grand Mesa National Scenic and Historic Byway won’t soon be forgotten. Rafting down the Colorado River is a must for thrill-seekers, while more laidback travellers can enjoy the river with a fishing trip.
More than 20 vineyards and wineries have turned Grand Junction into an up-and-coming wine country, and visitors can please their palates with a taste of Colorado’s locally grown varieties. Guided tours are available to make it easier to sample a wide offering of Colorado’s wines.
In town, Grand Junction welcomes visitors with museums, theatres, art exhibits and shopping destinations, plus an impressive selection of dining outlets. With plenty to do both in town and outdoors, it’s no wonder visitors return to Grand Junction again and again.
A local bus system is available but offers limited service in terms of routes, destinations and schedules. The city’s shopping areas are well designed for pedestrians, but as with many U.S. destinations, travellers often find it’s easiest to get around by car. Bicycles are another way to get around Grand Junction, and plenty of shops in town offer rentals.
Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) is the closest airport to the city, located about five miles (8 km) north of Grand Junction. Local hotels often offer shuttle service, while buses and taxis can also take you into the city. Car rental agencies are also on site.
