As your St. Lucia flight prepares to land the mighty Pitons welcome you to their beloved island. Situated in the Caribbean – north of the islands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique – St. Lucia has become a top spot for holidaymakers all year-round. Named the “the world’s leading honeymoon destination”, travellers book flights to St. Lucia for a relaxing getaway on the volcanic island. Rainforests, volcanic mountains, and pristine beaches are all within eye sight from many of the post St. Lucia resorts.
The west coast of the island is the most developed part of St. Lucia. Castries, the capital city, is where all the large cruise ships and yachts dock. Its public market provides a great introduction to the locals and their culture. Rodney Bay, Marigot Bay and Soufriere are where the resorts are located. And the famous “drive-in” volcano, Mount Soufriere, with its sulphur springs and pools is a major attraction. Nature lovers can explore the two national parks, Fregate Islands Nature Reserve and the Maria Islands Nature Reserve and Grand Anse home to rare birds and endangered sea turtles.
The climate is tropical – and lovely – year round. Temperatures average 27 degrees and mild trade winds keep humidity to a comfortable level. December and January are the coolest months, while June through August are the hottest. The hurricane season runs from June to November. January to April is the dry season while the rainy season lasts from May to August.
Hewanorra International Airport is the smaller of St Lucia’s two airports (the other is George F L Charles Airport) and handles approximately 500,000 passengers annually. It was originally a military facility and used to be known as Beane Army Airfield.
The airport is situated 3.7km (2.3 miles) north of Vieux Fort and 56km (34 miles) from Castries. As you’d expect in the Caribbean, staff members are friendly and helpful and passengers should have a good experience travelling through Hewanorra International Airport.
Once you’re ready to leave the airport, there are several ways of getting around St Lucia, including helicopter charters, yachts and ferries. Visitors are encouraged to try some of these alternative modes as they offer a unique glimpse into the Caribbean lifestyle.
