Kaohsiung in Taiwan is in the south west of the country and looks over the Taiwan Strait. It has many natural attractions including Lotus Lake, Ban Ping Mountain and the Dongsha Marine National Park. Historical sites provide an exciting day out. See the many monuments that are open to the general public like the Cemetery at Zhenghaijun, the Chi Ming Palace, the Cihou Lighthouse and the Central Library. There are plenty of interesting museums too that contain information, relics and artefacts from the world of astronomy, history, science and arts. As well as parks and zoos, enjoy shopping in the biggest night market in Taiwan, the Kaisyuan. Here you can buy Taiwanese handicrafts, cameras, clothing, knives and even live animals! Markets are lively, vibrant and exciting especially as the night wears on. Kaohsiung is a diverse place, with mountains, forests, oceans, art and culture. The architecture in the city is awe-inspiring. Not to be missed is the Dome Light which can be found in Formosa Boulevard Station, it’s a huge glass work of art, so don’t forget your camera. The reasons that people visit Kaohsiung is for the uniqueness, friendly people and its beauty. It’s busy, metropolitan and yet so relaxing. There are many landmarks to see like the Fo Guang Shan Monastery that houses enormous Buddhas, shopping malls that have Ferris wheels on the roof and beautiful National Parks.
For something a little different take a ferry across the harbour or hire a car to see what this delightful city in Taiwan has to offer. Low cost motorbikes can also be rented which are ideal for nipping in and out of the busy, peak time traffic.
It’s very easy to get from Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) to the city. Local transport includes taxis and buses, however do make sure to agree a price before boarding. There are two reliable MRT underground subway systems to get around Kaohsiung with a circular light railway line in the pipeline.
