Montenegro’s climate follows two distinct patterns; the coastal areas have a typical Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters, while the interior is characterised by warm summers with very cold winters. Podgorica is situated near the coast, so it tends to have relatively mild weather all year round. July and August are very busy with tourists flocking on flights to Podgorica from the Balkan region and Russia, which means that the city can be crowded and hotels are more expensive. June and September are considered to be the optimum months for a visit, with perfect weather and the possibility of cheap flights to Podgorica. The spring and autumn seasons promise good weather and hotels at excellent rates.
Podgorica hosts a handful of annual festivals, famous sport meetings, music, opera, food and art events and a list of long established cultural events throughout the year with the main ones taking place throughout July and December.

A flight to Podgorica will connect you with the largest city of Montenegro, which is a lively city with a reputation for vibrant nightlife and welcoming locals. The city has a handful of quirky sights and some picturesque parks and picnic locations which are a perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle. Most of Podgorica was destroyed during the Second World War but the new city has an enormous selection of trendy cafes and restaurants that line the attractive squares. Dating from the 10th century, the beautiful St. George’s church can be found at the foot of Gorica hill (after which the city was named). The church holds a treasure trove of icons from the 19th century in addition to a charming atmosphere and a scenic location near the city’s football stadium. The city’s most famous landmark is arguably the Millennium Bridge which is a 459 ft (140 m) long structure that offers pleasant views of the river and the city itself. Flowing through the heart of the city is the spectacular Moraca River, which is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. Tourists can follow the line of the river from Podgorica to the Montenegrin hinterland through a spectacular valley with unspoilt forests and mountains. Perhaps Podgorica’s most charming attraction is the city’s friendly people; because international tourism is a relatively new phenomenon in Montenegro the locals will always go above and beyond to ensure that you receive outstanding service.
With taxi stands on virtually every city centre street, taxis also provide a reliable option for travel around the city itself. With over 20 taxicab companies in direct competition you can expect to receive an efficient service at a highly affordable price.
Podgorica Airport (TDG) is located about 7.5 miles (12 km) south of the city and is used as a base by the national carrier Montenegro Airlines. Tourists have a number of options for reaching the city centre once their flight to Podgorica touches down. While buses operate to and from the city, they are not available at all times and the departures can be irregular. The most reliable option for reaching the city is to avail of one of the many taxis waiting outside the main terminal building. There is a reasonable flat rate for every journey to the city centre but this should be confirmed with the taxi driver prior to travel.
