Waited about 90 minutes in passport control in Newark because there were only 2 gates open for much of the time with several hundred people in the line.

Newport News is a great place to visit for many reasons, including the abundance of things to do, rich history, and ideal location close to many other worthwhile destinations in Virginia. A trip to Newport News can encompass everything from historic homes and neighbourhoods, to museums, shopping, and outdoor activities. The city is located a very short drive from Williamsburg, and close to Virginia Beach where in the warmer months (June through August) visitors can swim and take part in various water sports.
History buffs and those interested in the role Newport News played in the Civil War can pay a visit to Lee Hall Mansion, USS Monitor Center, The Mariner’s Museum, Virginia War Museum, and Endview Plantation. Other museums include the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, Virginia Living Museum (great for kids), and U.S. Army Transportation Museum.
There are 32 parks in Newport News meaning there are plenty of opportunities to spend time in the great outdoors. Newport News Park in particular is worth a visit due in part to its size – it’s one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi River. Activities in the park include hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, fishing, and year-round camping. There is also an 18-hole golf course, picnic areas, and gardens. King-Lincoln Park has a natural beach, playgrounds, tennis courts, and picnic area.
Shoppers have plenty of areas to keep them busy buying and browsing, including Jefferson Commons, Patrick Henry Mall, Historic Hilton Village, and Fort Warwick where everything from art and antiques, to clothing and accessories can be found. Newport News is also home to many different restaurants, and accommodations to suit many budgets, from hotels to bed and breakfasts to campsites.
Getting around in Newport News is fairly simple and can be done with a car or by the public bus system. Hampton Roads Transit serves most of the city, including Patrick Henry Mall, Christopher Newport University, downtown Newport News, and Riverside Hospital, among many others. Getting around by car can also be convenient for those who want more freedom of movement or who plan on exploring destinations around Newport News.
There are several ways to get into Newport News from Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF) and these include rental car, taxi and public bus. The easiest option depends on the type of trip you’re taking. If you’ll need a car throughout your stay, renting a car will be the most convenient. Otherwise taxi and bus work well. The airport is served by most major car rental companies, local taxi companies, as well as the Hampton Roads Transit city bus system.
